The Stair Master

August 21, 2004 - August 22, 2004

Well, this weekend proved that Rob is truly the 'Stair Master'!

In addition to putting a railing around the patio deck, Rob build 4 sets of stairs - from scratch - and a landing. We looked at pre-built stringers, but they just wouldn't work with the variable heights of our decks. So everything had to be customized 'on the job'.

As usual, we carried about 2,000 pounds of wood from Rancho Cucamonga up to the property. It looks like we'll be able to finish 'the basics' next weekend and be able to move our camp from Old Camp to South Camp... just in time for Labor Day weekend.

(As always, click on the picture to get a larger picture that you can see better)

One of the local residents came out to greet us when we arrived.

First, we added railings to the deck. We originally wanted pickets, and they may be added later, but we sort of like this clean look. In the foreground, you can see the plans for the stairs.

Front stairs were made separately, and carried to the front (yikes! they were really heavy!) Here, Rob is getting them positioned.

Fine-tuning the position of the stairs before screwing them to the deck.

Rob tests the stairs. Yep - they're sturdy enough.

Here's the space between Wes' tent deck and the patio, before the stairs.

After all the measuring and marking, making a fixture to space the supports was the easiest way to get them even.

Here are the finished 'stringers' for the stairs between Wes's tent and the patio.

These stairs were build 'in place' instead of separately, because of the way they're fastened to the deck.

Fitting the steps was a real trick with the weird angles to figure and cut.

Next, Rob builds a landing between the two decks.

Finishing up the stairs on the other side of the landing.

The Stair Master triumphs!

Bathroom stairs were a piece of cake.

Finally, Rob starts a framework for the stairs/landing between our deck and the patio

End of the day, deck, stairs and railing - finished and stained.

End of the day, front stairs (and peeking through, you can see the stairs between Wes' tent and the patio
