Coco and the Boardwalk

November 5-7, 2004

Well, there have been two more storms up here while we were gone, but the camp held up well. There was a tiny bit of moisture in the tents, and the wind had knocked over the set of shelves in the bathroom.

The mornings were around 44° and the high was around 62°. But it really didn't seem that cold. It's amazing what a difference it makes when you have the right clothes and coverings. We have two comforters over our sleeping bag, and we wear long johns, two shirts and a jacket. It's actually quite comfortable.

We brought our dog, Coco, up this time. We were really worried that she would just take off, but she was really, really good. Yes, she ran, and it was great seeing her lope through the meadows. But she always came back, and when we went on hikes, she got back to camp before we did. We brought her dog house, set it up on Wes's tent deck, and she just made herself at home.

Rob accomplished a lot this time, completing our boardwalk and making a ladder to start Wes's tree house.

Our excitement this time was when we came back from our early morning hike on Saturday before breakfast. Loretta noticed that the bathroom drapes had some small rips in them, and the nylon zipper had pulled open up for a couple of feet. Then she noticed the top of the porta-potty had mud smudges on it... and the clearly identifiable print of a bear! Hmmm - maybe the shelves didn't get knocked down by wind after all.

After these storms, the land is starting to green up. It's so beautiful! It's been almost a year since we've been coming up here, and last year it wasn't green at all at this time of year. But the winter rains came early this year. The green is such a welcome change from the brown grasses. And it's so amazing how fast it has grown! In some places, the new green grass is already 4 inches tall, and in only 2 weeks!.

Look how green Old Camp is!

Coco runs on Old Camp road. It's hardly recognizable, with all that grass.

Here's a cave we found on our hike. It was about 2 feet wide, and clearly a den for something.

Rob works on a pantry for the kitchen, taking apart a 'headboard' that Loretta's dad made many years ago for Loretta's son, Ryan.

Homesite, from the road - look, it's getting green!

Wes found this honeycomb in a tree that had fallen over long ago.

Our atrium has grass instead of dirt!

Look at the lawn by the fence now! .

These ferns have popped up all over the place

This gopher(?) kept popping his head up to watch us work on the boardwalk.

We take a walk to the South Fork river - 10 minutes away.

The river is very high, compared to 2 weeks ago.

Coco ran right into the water and had a ball - even though it was very cold.

See how full the river is?

Rob, Wes and Coco walk across to the middle of the river.
