Memorial Day 2005

05/27/05 - 05/30/05

This weekend started out very hot. We got to camp around 9pm Friday night, and it was still 80 degrees! Saturday was a very nice day, though. Not too hot, and Saturday night it got downright chilly. Sunday and Monday were beautiful.

Rob's daughter, Jenny, came up with us, and Loretta and Jenny spent several hours spraying the road - it was so bad that in places it was hard to see the road at night, coming into camp. They were so proud to be able to fill the garden sprayer without spilling! Later that night, Loretta remembered - they had forgotten to add the Roundup! So they had managed to water the road with 10 gallons of precious water. (Jenny went out and did it 'right' on Sunday).

Rob had designed a bench for the firepit, precut the wood, and carried it up to camp. As you can see from the pictures, it turned out beautiful!

(As always, click on the picture to get a larger picture that you can see better)

Once again, the Blazer is loaded down... this time with chairs and wood for benches

Rob makes sure everyone knows how to shoot, and we practice (slideshow)

Rob goes for a walk with his trusty rifle. He would actually like to shoot some dove or quail, which are both very plentiful up there.

This lizard hung around all weekend on the tarps.

Jenny and Wes take the ATV for a ride. Once Jenny got the hang of it, we could hardly keep her off!

Last week, Loretta called the post office to find out the regulations regarding mail boxes, because Rob wants to build one. This week, we found that someone (probably the mailman) had put this rock here! We assume it's to tell us where to put the mail box - but we sure would like to send a piece of mail and see if it gets here without an address :) (slideshow)

Rob cuts pieces for the bench

Bench pieces (notice the rounded edges) (slideshow)

First 'bench' is done (notice how it only has 3 legs right now, until it's joined with the others).

They're all done, ready to join together

Hmmm... maybe an amphitheater??

Here they are, all done and placed around the fireplace. Now, the only thing left is Loretta's 'favorite' job (you guessed it, sanding and staining). But that will have to wait until next week.

We went on a hike and found this skull, which Rob placed strategically at the entrance to our camp.

Purple flowers that were in abundance this weekend. They look like some sort of poppy. (slideshow)

Have no clue what this flower is.

These are probably some form of dandelion, but they sure are pretty.

The purple poppy-like flowers look so pretty in the fields. This is next to the homesite, and well site, and it probably where the solar system will go. (slideshow)

We've been watching these plants that have a tall stalk coming out of a set of low leaves. It's now getting ready to bloom. (slideshow)

Some kind of cool clover-like yellow flowers.

Milkweed (slideshow)

Wes and Rob spotted this very cool vine on our river walk. We haven't figured out exactly what it is yet. (slideshow)

Top of the ravine - still green and beautiful.

This is a rock that broke while Rob was excavating for an ATV path.

South Fork has never been so full! There were even river-rafters on the river. (slideshow)

This is one of our favorite spots on the river, although you can hardly recognize it because it's so full.

We've never seen Lake Kaweah so full! It has filled up almost to the top of the dikes they installed this year, and almost up to the highway (within about 6 feet). (slideshow)
