Our First Fire

05/06/05 - 05/08/05

No,it's not as bad as it sounds. We finally finished our fire pit and had our first fire! Rob's son, Matt, came with us this weekend. He's truly an eating/sleeping machine! When he wasn't eating, he was sleeping or acting like superman. Wait until you see some of the pictures.

(As always, click on the picture to get a larger picture that you can see better)

Rob saw this blue heron up by the cul-de-sac. We actually saw him three times this weekend - almost always close to the same place.(slideshow)

Rob, Loretta, Wes and Matt pose for a group picture

The Milk thistles are growing like crazy! Now that we know what they are, we've also discovered that they are a non-native, noxious pest. So Loretta gets out the Roundup again.

We go for a hike down to the river. Here, Matt looks out over the area to see if there's anything worthwhile shooting for dinner (there wasn't).

Coco, Matt and Rob rest by the river.

Look at how high the river is! This waterfall was much, much smaller earlier. It's almost hard to recognize.

Rob rests to wait for Loretta while Matt and Wes keep going. Funny how that works... Loretta's the one that's tired, but the guys get to rest while they wait for her.. then as soon as she catches up, it's time to move on.

We didn't see any of these last year, but there are quite a number of them this year. We think these are White Mariposas.(slideshow)

Not sure what this flower is. More new flowers every day.

Another new flower. We think these are Pimpernel. They are very, very small, and low to the ground, so they're easy to miss.

More of that heather-like plant that is still unidentified.

This very cool, very tall plant is also unidentified. It was growing down by the river.

This thistle frequently grows right next to the milk thistle, but is a different species.

This is another new flower that is unidentified. Look at how prominent the stamen are. This flower is about an inch and a half across.

Coming back from our hike, you can just barely see the tree house through the trees.

Matt and Wes rested and relaxed. Here, they play chess together. (slideshow)

Wes caught this huge dragonfly. It's wing was injured.

Matt, the machine, easily moves a rock that was in the way of the ATV.

The 'boys' on the ATV

In 'typical' Liefveld fashion, all the boys ride on the ATV, while the girls (Coco and Loretta) walk behind.(slideshow)

Matt at camp.

Our firepit takes shape. Here, Matt and Rob work on making it bigger. With Matt's help, it took about 20 minutes to finish making the inside bigger and deeper, and the first and second level about 10 inches wider all the way around.(slideshow)

Just as we were starting the fire in the dark, Wes noticed something hopping around in the firepit, and found this toad.

Rob shows Wes where to park the ATV after their ride together.
