Our First Rain

October 8-10, 2004

Winter is officially here, at South Camp. We had our first rain - in the middle of the night. Overall, our camp stood up to the rain fairly well. Yes, the inside of our tent did get a little bit wet, because our canopy drapes don't come all the way to the ground. But Wes's tent stayed in great shape.

As we lay in our sleeping bags, awake in the middle of the night listening to the rain, it suddenly became very apparent that we needed to have a boardwalk from the tent decks to the bathroom. No one wanted to walk in the mud just to get to the bathroom - especially in the middle of the night!

We continue to have visitors. This time, in the middle of the night, the ground squirrels found 3 acorns that I had brought back from our hike, and left on the kitchen table. In the middle of the night, we woke up to the sound of something which we finally identified as the squirrels moving the acorns to a 'better' (i.e. hidden) location.

Webs in the wind catch on the trees, looking like string art

Even at the end of the hot summer, purple flowers can sometimes be found in the tall dried grass

The roots of this tree had grown around this huge rock, and when the tree fell, the rock came with it.

Wes rode his bike on the camp roads, and in the rain

Camp decks in the rain

Even with mats, we tracked mud all over... time to get different mats

Rob decides to build a boardwalk to the bathroom to keep us out of the mud

Clouds over Blossom Peak, moving quickly

We found a deer neck, just about 50 feet from camp

Wes finds a beautiful moth on the decks.

The tall grasses are starting to lay down with the weight from the rain.
