Done with South Camp

August 28, 2004 - August 28, 2004

We're done constructing South Camp! After 4 weekends of grueling work, it's finally complete, and we've moved from Old Camp.

This weekend prompted pride, eagerness and sadness, as we completed the work at South Camp and moved everything from Old Camp to South Camp. Old Camp seemed so desolate stripped of its tents and canopies, yet barren of its natural grasses. But South Camp is wonderful! It feels like home, and we feel like Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson, all rolled into one.

Rob is already busy making benches, tables, and shelves to make it even more homey. Now that we're finished with the 'have to have's, we're starting to have fun with all the things we've been talking about doing.

On Saturday, as we ventured to Old Camp to pick up a load, a deer was resting right next to the road. She didn't seem particularly disturbed by our Blazer, but got up and sauntered away when Loretta rolled down the window. Unfortunately, we didn't have a camera on us, so you'll just have to take our word for it

On the last set of pictures, we had some questions about just what Loretta had been doing (besides taking pictures), while Rob was slaving away 'making stuff'. Well, since Rob would rather eat bear sh** than paint, Loretta was busy slaving away painting... as you'll see in one of the pictures below, that wasn't a particularly easy task either . And on this trip, Loretta moved most of the camp on the first day, while Rob finished up the final landing and sets of stairs.

South Camp is much quieter than Old Camp, has more breeze, and doesn't get the heat of the sun until later, since we're closer to the hills.

(As always, click on the picture to get a larger picture that you can see better)

Rob works on the landing between our tent deck and the patio

Hmm, making decisions and designing 'on the fly'. It couldn't be designed in advance, but had to be custom fitted at every step (no pun intended)

Now Rob figures out the stairs to the outside from our landing.

Stairs complete - This landing has 3 sets of stairs! Rob is truly the Stair Master! Note the tent in the background.

Now the stairs have been sealed. Don't they look great?

Finally, the stairs from the outside.

Now you can see what Loretta's been doing all this time - crawling under the decks to paint what Rob has made. Every time she thinks she's done, Rob builds something else that needs painting! (She's really getting tired of those paint clothes and threatened to burn them)

Tired of getting down on his knees to take a shower, Rob built 'the gallows' to hold the shower bag up high enough. It's a great invention, and the shower head pokes inside the bathroom for a shower.

More 'stuff' that Rob built. He took the pallets from Old Camp bathroom (used to keep our feet clean and off the dirt) and made wonderful benches/shelves out of them, along with our 'extra' lumber. Loretta sealed and stained them, and we can't wait to put them back in the bathroom.

Transporting the canopies from Old Camp to South Camp. It was quite a trick getting them up on the Blazer and securing them.. not to mention driving down the road!

From the Blazer, going down South Camp road, you can just barely see the camp, it's so secluded and well hidden.

The Blazer is almost to South Camp with its load.

We're now ready for guests.

Rob organizes the ratches and bungies into a spider web between two trees.
