Wesley's Spring Break

04/05/2005 - 04/07/05

Wesley has his Spring Break and we decided to spend the first part of the week in Three Rivers. Unfortunately, Loretta had to work and could not come along this trip.

But we got a lot of work done on the tree house. After this, we can frame the rest of the platform and put the planks down. Last we will build a railing around it and a roof. Should be done in 2009 I think!

(As always, click on the picture to get a larger picture that you can see better)

These are the new wooden shelf racks Rob made for the Blazer to make more room for Coco in the truck. They worked out great.

We think these are 'Fiesta Flowers'. They grow on a loose vine, which mounds up in a mass of purple. (slideshow)

This is a view of the ravine crossing, by the chain entrance

South Rocks from the road as we near South Camp. These are the same rocks we see from the camp looking over the meadow in front. Look how beautiful and lush it is right now.

The meadow and the front of South Camp from the road. If you look closely, you can barely see the bottom of the decks at camp. It's near the middle of the photo to the left of a light brown spot. That spot to the right of it is the driveway we use to park the truck in the back.

When we got to camp Wesley noticed there were deer bedding areas right next to the camp. We saw the deer moving around last week in the meadow and figured they would hang around the campsite.(slideshow)

Wes and Dad clean up the decks first.

Wes then takes out the 4x4 Arctic Cat for a spin around the property. He's getting quite good at it and has learned how to "crawl it" over the terrain. He learned to shift gears this week.(slideshow)

We ended up going for a hunt towards the end of the day with our pellet guns. Seems like we never shoot anything though, even though we have many opportunities.

When we got back, I bar-b-que'd a couple of steaks and baked potatoes. We also had canned peas (we love) with dinner. We were very hungry and it was delicious! (slideshow)

Wes checks out the nearby hillside for game.

We think these might be "Blue Dicks" (no kidding - that really is their common name... they are a member of the Lily family)

We have many awesome views from the homesite. At dusk it is really peaceful and beautiful. Vividly clear up here. This photo is of Horn Mountain towards the North/East (Wesley nick named these the "Twin Boobies) and a land marker for our hikes into the BLM. Ha!

Blossom Peak is always awesome. but at dusk, it is particularly so, with the sun and shadows making it look very rugged.

There was lots of water in the ravine, and Coco had a great time in it.

This fuzzy caterpillar is a wonderful color!

Breakfast was huge! And both Rob and Wes ate it all.(slideshow)

A common sight - a red tailed hawk soaring against the bright blue sky.

We also got more done on the tree house. What a pain in the @&*! that turns out to be. You need to have the strength of Hercules and be about 20 feet tall to be able to work on it. Jeez! Anyway, we got a landing constructed and supported for the first set of ladders and finally the second two sets that go up and into the tree house.

We had to splice the last two ladders to reach, and they are super sturdy. We were also able to put the final brace on the last section so the platform is stable.

Here's a view of the ladder system.

Finally, we know what these vines are. Last year, we saw many of the vines, and figured it was some kind of cucurbit. But we never saw any fruit. Later in the season, while hiking, we saw dried, prickly things in the path that looked like very prickly loofah.... but we couldn't find the plants. These are called Sierra Man-Root, or Wild Cucumber.
