Fixed Specialty Oils and Butters

Exotic Butters

Kokum butter - Unrefined

Kokum butter is the most stable and hardest exotic butter, with a melting point of 38-40 C (100-104 F) and a very high content of stearic-oleic-stearic triglycerides.

This kokum butter is natural - unrefined and not modified. As our supplier puts it: "it is what it is: hard and slightly off-white, without refining." Most kokum butters in the market have been modified to have an even viscosity, so they are smoother and whiter. They are then further refined with viscosity modifiers (capric/caprylic triglycerides or some fatty esters or fatty alcohols). Even though ours isn't smooth, it is very nice in a finished product - and you don't have to wonder what has been added.

Kokum butter is very good in skin and hair products, acne products (believe it or not!) and skin tonics. It's very good by itself, applied to lips, hands and feet.

Sal butter - Unrefined

Now that we've discovered Sal Butter, we may never use another exotic butter again!

Seriously, Sal Butter combines all the best qualities of cocoa butter ( without the scent) and mango butter. It's physical properties are much like cocoa butter, and it can be used in similar applications. Like mango butter, it combines good emolliency properties with superior oxidative stability. It is solid at room termperature, with a melting point of 34-38 C (93-100 F)

Shea butter - Unrefined

Shea butter comes from the kernels of the Shea nut tree, native to Western Africa. It has a unique fatty acid composition and has a high content of unsaponifiables (approx 8-15%). Our natural shea is extracted by hydraulic pressing or by screw expellers, NOT by chemical means. It is non-toxic and non-irritating, and derived totally from renewable resources. In this unrefined state, its healing properties are optimum, containing Cinamic acid that gives shea its healing properties.

Our African Natural™ is a very light creamy color and is extremely soft and rich. It's excellent to moisturize your hair.

Specialty Oils

Fractionated Coconut Oil

We've found a new love! This oil moisturizes and soaks into your skin almost immediately! It remains liquid at room temperature and has no odor. It is water clear, has a light texture, and is tasteless, with an indefinite shelf life. Essential oils mix easily with it, and it will disperse in water by thorough mixing, aided by a slight heating. It's the most dispersible of all vegetable oils.

Karanja Oil

Love neem properties, but hate the smell? Try Karanja Oil, from the Pongamia Glabra tree. Karanja has a wonderful, nutty aroma, without the somewhat sulphurous overtone that neem has. Like neem oil, it has insecticidal, antiseptic, antiparasitic and cleansing properties. Our Karanja has a minimum karanjin content of 20,000 ppm). It has been used historically in the treatment of scabies, itch, herpes, eczema and sores. Like neem, it can also be used in a garden spray.

Karanja is very high in oleic fatty acid (approx. 61%), with the next highest fatty acid being linoleic (approx. 10%), so this oil will add conditioning characteristics to your soap.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Meadowfoam seed oil is one of our favorite oils.

It is liquid to very low temperatures, and its unique chemical properties make it one of the most stable vegetable oils known. It has a high tolerance to heat, and has a wide range of applications.

It is very high quality, has a composition very similar to sperm whale oil, and can be used as a substitute for jojoba oil. It is said to add shine to hair and moisturize the skin better than most oils.

Natural Coconut Premium

This virgin coconut oil is great for those products which either lose the scent (such as soap) or for which a coconut scent is undesireable (such as use with certain essential oils).

This virgin coconut oil is made with non-copra processing techniques and offers the same high-quality you've come to expect from us, but at a less expensive cost.

The saponification values are the same as the Virgin Oil de Coco-Crème.

Neem Oil - Natural, cold-pressed

This is one stinky oil, folks!

Neem is very good for the skin, because it contains natural ingredients with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antiseptic (germicidal), and anti-inflammatory properties. It has moisturizing, regenerative and restructuring properties, and is used to heal eczema, psoriasis, dry skin and dandruff.

It's also an excellent insect repellent.

The active ingredient in Neem oil is Azadirachtin, and ours has a minimum of 1500ppm (that's parts per million, in case you're wondering).

Tamanu Oil - 100% Cold-pressed, Pure Extract of Tamanu Nuts

Tamanu Oil has been used for centuries as a therapeutic aid for all kinds of skin conditions, ranging from burns, to skin allergies, acne, herpes, diabetic sores, bed sores, rashes, and wounds.

We are in possession of the results of a clinical study conducted in November 2001 which evaluated the ability of tamanu oil to improve the appearance of scars. This document is far too long to include here, but in summary, after using Tamanu oil twice a day for 9 weeks, a significant improvement in the appearance of scars was observed visually. The assessment included scar length and scar width, in addition to the appearance of the scar in comparison with adjacent normal skin (including skin tone and raised appearance). The visual assessment was performed by a single trained evaluator, with the aid of an illuminated magnifying lamp and a shadow-free cool white flourescent light source.

I have personally used it on itchy insect bites, with the result that the itchiness completely disappeared.

Tamanu is a dark, brownish green in color. The laboratory analysis calls the odor 'nutty'. However, I would say it smells just like celery juice to me.

Virgin Oil de Coco-Crème

This is so much better than any other 'virgin coconut oil' that we've ever seen!

Here are just some of its wonderful qualities:

  • It's biologically pure, exctracted from fresh coconut milk, using state of the art 'coconut wet process' technology.
  • Has a high oxidative stability that provides protection to other ingredients without using chemical anti-oxidants, and contains anti-fungal properties, as well.
  • An excellent source of monolaurin, as well-known antiseptic substance found in lauric acid oils.
  • Has a very low viscosity that conveys subtleness and a light feel effect which give it excellent spreadability and makes it easy to mix with other ingredients.
  • Has an extra long shelf life. It's 'official' shelf life listed in the specifications is 2 years. However, our supplier has had a 3rd party laboratory conduct shelf life studies that place it around the '5 years plus' mark. Their reference sample is 1993, and is still viable.
  • Last but not least: It smells absolutely divine!
